3 Easy Things to Do to Begin Your Career Pivot

Is a new career or job on your list of goals for 2024? These three simple steps will get you moving!

Shifting from your current career path or job to a new direction that aligns better with your interests, skills, and goals can often feel overwhelming. This is especially true for people with PhDs and other doctorates who may not have been exposed to career options or trained in effective jobs search strategies during their graduate programs.

As a person with a PhD or other doctorate, here are three easy things you can do to get started on making a successful career or job pivot in the New Year.

1. Do some self-reflection. evaluate your current situation: Reflect on your current job, what you like and dislike about it, and the aspects you want to carry forward to your new career.  Download this free 2024 Goal Setting Workbook and complete the Job Satisfaction Wheel.

2. Set up 20 minute informational interviews with other PhDs to gain insights into their roles, industries, and get valuable advice for making a successful transition to a new career or job.

3. Seek professional guidance. Talking with a career counselor or career coach is a great way to get unstuck and moving on your much needed career or job pivot. If you are a current student, use the resources available to you at your institution. Explore all of the career resources offered to alumni through all of the schools you attended. You might also consider finding a private career counselor or coach. Most will offer free initial consultations. Meet with a few to find one that fits your needs and style.
